Actor Peter Falk Dead at 83 RIP

While there is never any joy when someone passes away, it is sometimes considered to be for the better. Actor Peter Falk passed away last night at the age of 83, which is very sad. However, he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and his only real contact with the public in the last few years had been a very sad case a few years ago where he was very confused in public. His career was long and varied, as reported here in the New York Times, but it is TV role as the detective Columbo that really defined him, for better or worse. His rumpled rain coat, old car driving detective was loved by many, and in later years he often ended up playing the same sort of character. Good stories from Bloomberg, Entertainment Weekly, and The Hollywood Reporter here. RIP Peter Falk, 1927-2011.

Did Schwarzenegger Father Out Of Wedlock Child?

This is certainly the story most like to get talked about today. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor, former Muscle Man, former Governor of California, and soon to be former husband of Maria Shriver may be in a whole heap of trouble after revelations that he may have fathered a child out of wedlock with a former employee. It’s a big story, because it hits both the celeb world (TMZ story here), and also the political world. The story was original broken by the LA Times, read it here.. More spin on this one from E! Online, The Guardian, and CNN

Hollywood Herpes Lawsuit

One of the more amusing stories of this week has been the lawsuit filed by an unnamed person (confidental name) suing an “unnamed A-List celebrity” for giving them herpes. Basically, they met up in Las Vegas, spent a night of “”mutual oral copulation, mutual self-gratification, rubbing and massaging each other, play-wrestling, licking and (unprotected) intercourse”. During this session, the person apparently contracted herpes. They are suing for $20 million. If the story stopped there, it would be wild enough, but TMZ.com has learned that there is also apparently a significant sex tape made of these sessions, and now porn tube and video websites are offering well past $1 million for the tapes. Hollywood and the Movie world are in mourning today at the death of Elizabeth Taylor. She passed away, reportedly as a result of the ongoing battle with congenital heart problems. There are stories all over the place: Hollywood Reporter, TMZ, CNN, Montreal Gazette, and so on. Plenty of celebrity reaction too, especially from people like Elton John in this New York Daily News piece. While her health had been declining for years (she was confined to a wheelchair for the last while), he death is still seeming a shocking to many that knew and loved her.

Keith Olbermann Out at MSNBC

An interesting story, especially considering that the Comcast takeover of NBC properties is only a few days on. Keith Olbermann, an 8PM fixture of MSNBC suddenly annouces on Friday that this is his last show on the network. Now, he has come and gone before, but for the last 7 or 8 years, he has been the 8PM fixture, getting good ratings and seemingly solid in the position. Plenty of speculation here, from Comcast not liking him much to his campaign donations getting in the way, but at this point it isn’t clear. What is clear is that the network did allow him to have a reasonable time to say goodbye to his fans, which indicates perhaps that this wasn’t a move in anger, but rather something both sides agreed to. See the sign off goodbye here (at least until they take it down!)

Conan O’Brien Returns to Late Night TV

Two years ago, Conan O’Brien was set to be the master of late night. He had been selected to replace Jay Leno on NBC’s 11:30 Late Night show (Jay replaced the late Johnny Carson). But lower then expected ratings for Jay’s new 10PM show (which failed quickly), and sliding demographics on the 11:30PM show didn’t help, and soon Conan found himself on the outside with a big going away payoff, Jay back in his 11:30PM chair, and Conan off the air. TBS (cable superstation) decides to take a risk and get into the late night game, a tonight is the first show of the new Conan show on TBS, starting at 11PM. Read a good story from CNN here.
